As I write the intro to this new blog by the dim glow of candle light and the constant roar of the generator,
I can’t help but think.. what timing!
We lost power last night, probably around 10:30. I really didn’t think to much about it. I just went to sleep and prayed that when I woke up the power would be back on. I guess I didn’t pray hard enough.
I don’t want to get into a debate about global warming but I tend to think it is not all that they are saying it is. Our weather this winter has been very strange to say the least. As well as the rest of the country. 2 weeks a go we had such a snow storm the elder sitter called and cancelled because she didn’t want to drive, the conditions were so bad. Didn’t really matter to me I was not crazy about going out and braving the elements either.
After we got dumped on with the snow the it got bitter cold, with gale force winds. Then we had sleet and rain. In the past few days we have had 60 degree weather. My yard is like a mud hole. With all my dogs and cats, the house is much more of a disaster than normal.
The snow, sleet, ice and rain could not have come at a worse time. This was right before Christmas and the reposts from the retailers for this holiday season was not to good to begin with and the nasty weather only added to the dismal sales.
Last year we were without power for 5 days, that was no fun. my husband gave up and bought a generator. When he was at the gas station buying gas for “Miss Ginny” the power came back on. So this morning is the first time we have gotten to use our new generator. After reading the directions and getting it fired up, my husband came in with an extension cord and asked what I wanted plugged in first?
Didn’t take long for me to know priorities…. my coffee pot!
The wind is howling and the temperature is dropping but at the moment it is not bad in the house at all. Coffee is done, so to me the day has started.
After many attempts to report my power outage I am finally able to get through to Detroit Edison. I get a recorded message telling me estimated time is 6 hours. NO SWEAT I can handle that.
We have lived in this house for over 25 years. We are out in the country and it is not unusual for the power to be out OFTEN. But I don’t find this so bad with “Miss Ginny.”
Now mind you my idea of camping is a Holiday Inn. So I have no intention of being without all of my amenities. But what if I could equip my house to be more self sufficient. Not having to rely so much on Detroit Edison.
That is what this blog will be about. Preparing to be more self sufficient. We will be talking about alternative energy ideas.
Things like solar power and wind power. We will also talk about recycling and making a greener earth in general. There are many energy options that we can look into and I will welcome your comments and your input. Lets investigate the many different energy alternatives.
